Detroit weather is largely continental. Like the rest of the southeastern Michigan, Detroit weather is tempered by the nearby Great Lakes, and is characterized by its cold winters and warm summers.
Winters in Detroit are predominantly and bitterly cold; the icy winds that blow through the city occasionally push temperatures below 10 °F (−12 °C). Between November and early April, snow is a regular visitor to the city of Detroit, ranging between 1 to 10 inches (2.5 to 25 cm) per month.
Even during the spring season, weather in Detroit remains damp and chilly, its temperatures usually hovering between 30 °F to 60 °F. Yet, thanks to its still abundant snowfall Detroit is swarmed with tourists that flock to the area in large numbers to fully capitalize on the skiing opportunities the city so generously supplies.
It’s not until June rolls in that temperatures begin their steady ascent. Starting as mild they eventually rise to 80 °F (26 °C), occasionally soaring to above 90 °F (32 °C). During the summer season, humidity remains high throughout.
In September and October temperatures slowly decrease to 70 °F (21C) and then to 60F (15C). Detroit weather remains predominantly pleasant and comfortable, the falling foliage tinting the landscape in a cascade of colors, until cold winds and snowfall enter the picture sometime in October, heralding the arrival of winter and its gloominess.
Detroit’s annual precipitation usually averages 784.00mm (30.87in), or 65.33mm (2.57in) per month. May is the wettest month of the season with an average of 89mm (3.50in) of precipitation occurring during 12 days. Despite the considerable snowfall they experience, December, January and February only receive a meager 53mm (2.09in) of rain.
